Directions for Using Sampling Kits for Methanol Preserved Soils

(Used for analysis for Gasoline UST, BTEX+, or 8260+ List)

For each sample:

  1. Collect 10 cc of compacted soil in the plastic syringe coring device.

  2. Insert the soil into the 40 ml glass pre-tared teflon lid glass VOA vial.

  3. Snap off the top of glass methanol ampule and add 10 ml pre-measured methanol. Do not snap open with bare hands.

  4. Inspect soil/methanol mixture. Methanol must cover the soil. If not, add another 10 ml, then add more soil until methanol just covers the soil and note volume of methanol on chain-of-custody.

  5. If soil is low density (e.g. "loamy"), add soil until methanol just covers the soil.

  6. Replace cap on VOA vial. Make sure cap threads are clean, otherwise leaking will occur.

  7. Collect some soil (without methanol) for dry weight measurement. *Use plastic flip-top bottle*

  8. Fill out chain of custody form with Sample ID, Date of Sampling, and Client Info.

  9. Ship or deliver samples to lab (on ice). Keep samples cool (< 4EC or < 40E F) and ship to lab ASAP. Samples must be analyzed within 14 days.
